A truly great book about finding one's identity when you are born in one culture and raised in another.
Some other books and reading that I find great for anyone looking for more experience with literature:
- Teaching for Joy and Justice by Linda Christensen: I use many of the ideas and ways of teaching that are explained in this book. It really gives you a better idea of why we write and the importance behind it all. Colleagues, parents, and students alike can find many great ideas throughout this book.
- A Confederacy of Dunces by John Toole: Considered one of the great comedies ever written, this is a true test of higher reading ability. It is not easy and very long, but nonetheless an excellent book.
- The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins: The hype behind this book is all well worth it. One of the better dystopian novels that I have read, and an easy read for any one at the high school level. Students will really connect with characters Katniss and Peeta.
- Leave of Grass by Walt Whitman: Truly one of the great poetic works in history, having a lot of ties to the real world and mankind
- When I Stop Talking, You'll Know I'm Dead by Jerry Weintraub: This book is written about the life, times, and experiences of Jerry Weintraub, who proved through sheer perseverance, anything can be acheived and the experiences you take away from it all can be more then worth their weight in gold. Parental Discretion: some of the language in this book may not be considered school appropriate for all age groups.
"A book is the only place in which you can examine a fragile thought without breaking it, or explore an explosive idea without fear it will go off in your face. It is one of the few havens remaining where a man's mind can get both provocation and privacy." - Edward P. Morgan
